The idea of a machine proving theorems in logic, and the idea of using logic to understand what a machine was doing … this double relationship began to inspire me because it was clearly not very simple. The relationship wasn't just an inverse relationship “I bite you and you bite me”: the computer says: “I will automate your logic” and the logic says “I will tell you what your programs mean”. These are two different relationships. [from http://www.informatics.sussex.ac.uk/users/mfb21/interviews/milner/]

etruscan computing

pirate torture for computers:

from: http://blog.urbanomic.com/cyclon/archives/2009/04/index.html

The Etruscan torture has been described as chaining the living person to a rotting corpse, face to face and limb to limb until the living person perishes by the decay of the corpse. Only when the living person was blackened by putrefaction, the Etruscan robbers freed the living, now a corpse, from the chains. A metaphysical torture and a model for the intelligible ontology, Aristotle suggests that the relation between the body, the soul (psyche) and the intellect (nous) as the triad of his ontology can be explained as follows: ‘their bodies [those who have fallen into the hands of the Etruscans], the living with the dead, were bound so exactly as possible one against another: so our souls, tied together with our bodies as the living fixed upon the dead.’ (Cicero quoting Aristotle in Hortensius)

(coming full circle) - oskoff lovich's code-brut (ap/xxxxx?) inspired noish transcode command cat /dev/mem » /dev/dsp - reformulate for Etruscan Torture for 2 comp. machines

all workings by Martin Howse

1] FIRST MACHINE:

ifconfig eth0 192.168.1.1

netcat -l 666 | tee /dev/dsp > /dev/mem

cat /dev/mem | netcat 192.168.1.2 666

2] SECOND MACHINE:

ifconfig eth0 192.168.1.2

netcat -l 666 | tee /dev/dsp > /dev/mem [started before third command on machine 1]

cat /dev/mem | netcat 192.168.1.1 666

- testing with /dev/urandom (not /dev/mem for safety) - hovers at 2nd command + no sound output

testing

machine 1 jonnix@ubuntu:~$ sudo service network-manager stop

[sudo] password for jonnix:

network-manager stop/waiting

jonnix@ubuntu:~$ sudo ifconfig eth0 192.168.1.1

jonnix@ubuntu:~$ sudo cat /dev/mem | netcat 192.168.1.2 666

machine 2

jonnix@jonnix:~$ sudo ifconfig eth0 192.168.1.2

[sudo] password for jonnix:

jonnix@jonnix:~$ sudo netcat -l -p 666 | tee /dev/dsp

sound out frm machine 2. quickly breaks down and machine 1 reports cat: /dev/mem: Operation not permitted

machine 1

root@ubuntu:~# ifconfig eth0 192.168.1.1
root@ubuntu:~# cat /dev/mem | netcat 192.168.1.2 666
root@ubuntu:~# (cursor blinks here)

machine 2

root@jonnix:~# ifconfig eth0 192.168.1.2
root@jonnix:~# netcat -l -p 666 | tee /dev/dsp - > /dev/mem &
[1] 6849
root@jonnix:~# Can't grab 0.0.0.0:666 with bind

no sound etc, so * re-entered

root@jonnix:~# ifconfig eth0 192.168.1.2
root@jonnix:~# netcat -l -p 666 | tee /dev/dsp - > /dev/mem &
[1] 7029

then * re-entered last command on machine 1

sound for 1 minute then a) machine 2 terminal crashed, machine 1 terminal
defaulted to root@ubuntu:~# (cursor blinks here)

repeated * on both machines
got sound again (always from machine 2)
then top of machine 2 screen became a band of nasty pixels, still noise,
screen went black and noise looped so hit power button to kill!
machine 1 still running so halted process with alt. c

a) in terms of crashes (i think you expected?)

Yes, all processes (including terminal, X-server/screen …) are in memory. So corrupting this…

b) in terms how to create more sustained noise (use machines more on other
processes/routines 1st?

Then it does become more about aesthetics, of course…

or run other routines at same time as etruscan
running?)

Could work but is quite hit and miss - still would crash. Guess it comes down to: slow down or stop/intermittently crashing, implement etruscan torture on a process level (also reminiscent of Vuksik's actors in search of…) or other translation.

c) the sound from machine 2 is it listening . /dev/dsp whats happening in
machine 1? if so how to develop so both play each other

machine 1 is listening it seems but

cat /dev/mem | netcat 192.168.1.1 666

is not running on machine 2 it seems.

http://exquisite-code.com/ theory of fictions: the production of all that language whose terms do not refer to real entities into language whose terms do refer to real entities but “a fictitious entity is an object, the existence of which is feigned by the imagination, feigned for the purpose of discourse, and which, when so formed, is spoken of as a real one” (Bentham).

Quine on Bentham and language: Another striking trait of scientific philosophy [since the nineteenth century] has been an increasing concern with the nature of language. In responsible circles this has not been a retreat from more serious issues. It is an outcome of critical scruples that are traceable centuries back in the classical British empiricists Locke, Berkeley and Hume, and are clearer in Bentham. It has been appreciated increasingly in the past sixty years that our traditional introspective notions -our notions of meaning, idea, concept, essence, all undisciplined and undefined- afford a hopelessly flabby and unmanageable foundations for a theory of the world. Control is gained by focusing on words, on how they are learned and used, and how they are related to things Quine, W.V. Theories and Things.
