introduction

Stack, Frame, Heap (SFH) is a series of interventions within the mined or damaged environment, attempting to impose logical or computational structures and production processes (underlying these) on this geological landscape.

SFH re-situates some of computation's production processes (etching, leaching, doping) and products within ruined quarries, mines and/or suitable derelict landscapes. Research will also centre on bi-directional parallels between computation and geological metaphors (sedimentation, read write, sort operations)

[How to map this across techniques below eg. bootstrapping/energetic transformation, memory/sedimentation, geology, substrate transformation?]

techniques

transductions/energetic transformations

1] environmental peltier (thermo-electric)

  • magnetic field generation && temperature differentials - ore layers (eg. manganese silicate) combined earth (telluric) batteries → thermo-emf ('cold/hot spots') - orig. peltier was bismuth/antimony and copper wires > make small rock ore versionings > add [cyano]bacteria (growth/species differentials according to temps?)

2] telluric earth battery: zinc, iron/copper electrodes (eg. Bain: 1 metre → 1 volt) - northern electrode deeper than southern increases current

3] harnessing photonic energy (crude embedded solar panels - cuprous oxide, photosynthesis, bioluminscence, radiotrophic fungi)

4] kinetic-piezoelectric (wind, movement of animals)

5] atmospheric/EM energy - antenna, conductor for lightning, above ground voltage differentials

[and where to put storage of resources/energy or memory? also some kind of system of feedback/self-steering?]

substrate transformations

1] bio-chelation - using plants (Indian mustard, hemp, pigweed, alpine pennycress) to chelate/sequester heavy metals see http://www.pcbfab.com/waste-treatment/ && https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Phytoremediation - stored in roots/stems/leaves or neutralized/vapours

2] bio-sump (construction in low/under earth w. filtration stuff sit layered on to surface/heap) - some kind of processing that outputs can be taken > rock mixes as filtration (leachpads?) to feed other experiments eg. through filtered liquid input

3] bioleaching of comp. waste (and other minerals/ores) copper, lead etc with fungi: Aspergillus niger (growing on onion skins), Penicillium simplicissimum (former produces organic (citric) acid)

4] growing plants in free silicon

5] salt brine heaps, saltpeter garden beds [other heaps?]

6] rain (weak carbonic acid) reacts w. pyrite && chalcopyrite > acid solutions of sulphuric, ferrous, ferric, and copper sulphates - heaps/stacks using mine materials +/- foreign geo-imports

7] sorting, crushing, pounding, digging, stacking, heaping [see 5]

8] flows are manipulated through insertion of layers (plastic, semi-permeable), the etching of channels (miming the processor) between layers and distinct processes, the establishment of borders/containment

potential outputs

1] infra/ultra sound

2] audio magnetotelluric measurements

3] visible changes in the landscape over time (earth, plants)

4] a measurement which is part of the earth and becomes an expression acting on itself [???] - eg. ph changes and flora

5] mobile probe system: curve tracer(audio ramp), resistance change

misc technical ideas

ptrace and insertion of software register values into the earth. a process buried in the earth in its unfolding. a register in the earth. inserting and retrieving comp signals into the earth - as digging, as electricity. (or stack from microcontroller, stack pointer position - can this be manipulated?)

explain - and is this diff. to bringing in alien geology? “a process buried in the earth in its unfolding”

err. is cheaper than alien geology!
